Tore Tau Kueyh

My friends always ask me : Do you really love to cook that much?
I will always give them a few giggles and said : I live to eat.
haha... typical Penangite huh? XD

Ya, it's true, especially when you're overseas and you miss the food at your hometown *especially your mum's not-guarantee-tasty-but-always-hearty meal*
and the only solution is either you forget about them or
roll up your sleeves and move your hand in the kitchen!

Of course I took the second option. Remember? I'm born to eat. XP

As Chinese New Year is approaching, of course I miss all the kuih making session with my mum and my aunties. Even though I do get some nagging and instructions delivered in high pitching voice, I still love it! Especially the moment the cookies were sent into the oven and soon the aroma filled the air, and finally came out and awwh~.... I'm drooling..... XD

Last year I did blog about the lurve letters a.k.a kuih kapit making in my house.
But this time, I'm going to blog about peanut cookies, Penang Hokkien would call it 'Tore Tau Kueyh", and my Malay friends call them Kuih Mazola. What ever it is, the thing matters to me is the 'YumYum" factor. XP

Alright, let's move our hands!

First, roast some peanuts till they're fragrant and almost burnt.
Then remove the skin of the peanut and blend them till they're fine.
But in my case, I would prefer to have some texture in it, so I didn't really blend until the peanuts turn into powder.

To produce the dough as shown above, mix the peanuts with ......

some plain flour (of course coles smart saver, the cheapest brand!)
normally the proportion would be peanut:flour = >2:1
if you want your kuih to melt into your mouth at the moment you put them in.
*that's a tip from my aunt, thanks 芳姑!*

some peanut oil

some caster sugar

before sending them into the oven, I brushed them with some egg yolk and a little egg white

HERE YOU GO! Song's TORE TAU KUEYH!

random stuffs

Thanks to the 'awesome' weather, with rain continuously for 4 days, my journey in the farm has come to an end. =(
Hmm... I think it's time to settle my enrolment for new semester and ready for my Gold Coast trip. And of course, this post will be a wrap up for my farming experience.

I would say that working in a farm is not hard, just tiring. Everyday, you have to reach the farm by 7.30am, and in my case, I would wake up around 5.30am, dilly-dally for a while, take some brekkie and cook my lunch. Normally, I would be out by 0700, because it takes at least 30 minutes to reach the farm by driving, and thank God, it's summer!!! If not, I think I would take 1 hour to toss and turn on my bed, another 1 hour to flip and flap on my bed, 1 hour to dilly-dally here and there..... and finally slack back to my comfy bed. XD

There's no photos of me working in the farm... *sob-sob* The rain came in too sudden, and it's already my last day in the farm before I knew it. =( However, one of the great advantage of working as cherries picker is you get to eat as much cherries as you want. Of course, there's no reason for me not to 'tapao' some back. haha.... shhh.....

It's heavenly great when you freeze up some cherries and eat them while you're watching movies or reading books, or even gossiping with your friends in the middle of the night. They tasted just like slushies in the shop!! Gosh~ I think I'm addicted to them, haha....
They contain heaps of:
-Vitamin C
-Vitamin A
-Bioflavonoids
-Ellagic acid (a kind of antioxidant)
-Perilly (alble to arrest tumour cells)
-Anthocyanins (another powerful antioxidants)
-Melatonin (another antioxidant) and many more good stuffs.
But, be careful with the sugar level.... You won't want to end up with too much glucose either. *All these are info from the web*

Steps to a successful cherry jam making:
(kononnya) =___=

First, smuggle some cherries from the farm buy some fresh cherries and wash them thoroughly.

Second, de-stone and de-stem the cherries. Or should I say,
"buang batang dan bijik cherri"? a.k.a. castrate the cherries XP

。。erbs~

Kitchen homicide? =O

*Back to the topic*
-Heat up the castrated processed cherries until it boils,
-Bring down the heat and let it simmer till they're soft and mushy.
-Cool them down and put them into a blender and blend till the flesh and skin of the cherries are squashed till unrecognisable *KEJAM nyer~*
-Pour them back into the pot and bring it to the same simmering as before.
-Put in as little or as much sugar as you like. In my case, I only put in 3 tablespoon of sugar.

"OMG!!! 3 tablespoon of sugar for 1.5kg of cherries?"
"What to do?... I've to jaga badan mah~" haha.... duh~ XP

- Actually I notice that you don't really need much sugar for this jam. The natural glucose content in the cherries is more than enough.
- Before switching off the stove, *optional*
-add in a few tablespoon of lemon juice (to add a zesty flavour to the jam)
-mix in a tablespoon of cornflour (to thicken up the jam)

Da-LANG!!
Song Song's homdemade cherry jam!!!

My housemate's homemade pancake with my jam... haha! YUM!

It tastes so good until you can dig out a full ladle of the jam
and eat it just like that!

haha...whatever!
XD

Appiee's photo

It's really hard to find time to sit down and blog about your recently life when you are busy with work. However, the weather bureaucracy sent out a flood warning in the early morning. Therefore, it means no work today. Yay~! Gonna get some rest! But, sigh~ no work means no money, no money means no honey. =P

You all must be wondering what's appiee, I bet. haha... just my own term for apples. In the farm, I notice the supervisor always end the noun he use in "-ie"
for example, when he's suppose to say
"Go and have a check on the row you have done just now"
he would say: "Go and have a checkie on your previous row"
I also discover many Aussie terms they use in the farm (or should I say Tassie?).
'tea' = 'dinner'
'smoko' = 'small break between work' (perhaps for those who smoke, I think)
and of course many more XD

The farm I work in is called Carlthorpe a.k.a. Top Qual. The company is based in Hobart (capital city of Tasmania), just that its major apple farm is in Lonnie.
Alright, I'm too lazy to elaborate any further. Let the photos do the talking!

There're many species of apples in the farm, eg. Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Royal Gala, Pink Lady, Jazz, Granny Smith, Fuji .... etc.

Just to let you know the amount of crates used to shift the apples during the apple picking season. See the building behind the crates? It's almost 4 storey high.
Gosh~ who knows what'll happen when the crates fall? XD

The one in the picture above is Granny Smith, which we normally call "Granny's Apple"

Guys, meet Kris...... and his sexy jeans XP
I had a Korean working partner and this bloke is my current partner. His background is rather complicated or should I say "A fuzz of life"? He was a drug addict *OMG!* , and now he's major in Fine Arts *WHAT~!?", and specialised in oil painting. hmmm... what can I say about him?
hmm..... Quiet but definitely hard working (he's so far the best working partner I can find on the farm, because the pay you get is the speed of your work, and your partner's as well)

The supervisor always repeat their favourite quote:
"One big, one small.... Take big, leave small
Many big, many small.... Take small, leave Big
Many small, no BIG.... Take them all
All medium, take till there's 1/2 left"

Nik aka Nik Aziz (ya.... same as the one in PAS) XD
Another Malaysian in the farm, who's also an architecture student,
just that he's taking master. And we are the only Asians, but who cares?

That's all about it, hope you guys have a great early 2011 as well! CHEERs!!

Is it money?

Finally, my apple thinning job is coming to an end in few days time, and I'm going into cheery picking after that.
"Money~ Money~"
That's really the sole motivation you can get when you feel tired from working. When you think of that, your will feel that your hands have been revived and start moving again. haha.... Money is not everything, but I'm sure there're a list of things you won't be able to do without money.
Nothing much about this post... just that sometimes money does change a person and others around. *sigh~*
or did they...?

"the lights are shining on the sea
as the rolling waves crash along the beach

and our minds were meant to sail
take a rest from our thoughts
take a brake from this world
and we'll feel miles away
from the places that we used to be"

Thoughts of 2010

I know it's not 31st of December yet!!!
But I'm afraid I'll miss it
(maybe going somewhere else...just maybe...)
Therefore, I would like to record some useful thoughts I obtained this year.

1. Life is never hard till you said so
After departing to Australia, I start to REALLY feel the stuffs that need to be paid attention to in our daily lives. It's totally different from the time when I was still in KBU or anywhere else in Malaysia. It's really tiring and of course the reward is never disappointing (not to mention the disappointments we had before the reward XD ). Even for something like eventually found a place to really 'TUMPANG' , is very rewarding. (I know you all won't get it >_< ) Anyway..... I still remember the time we got a house, yes... a 'HOUSE'. At first, I don't really feel it. But when I heard my housemates' weeping in the silence, when they're praying during the first evening we got our house...... DAMN!! I just can't hold it........
haha..... nevermind, once in a while. (o_O) I just can't forget the process of getting the house.

2. Don't let your religion tie you
Please, I'm not trying to spread any propaganda or asking everybody to be free thinker. I have a religion as well, okay~ Just that, I've talked to many people and some are strong in their own religions and some are free thinkers. What I can conclude is, you can be a free thinker if you think that your life is complete without any guide. But that doesn't mean free thinker is no good. Both, being religious and free thinker has good and bad, just the way you see it and live it.

3. Never ever stereotype anything
Stereotyping is never a good thing, no matter you're thinking in a good way or the opposite. The moment you start stereotyping others, you'll either end up stereotyping even more and eventually feel disappointed with it, or you'll straight away eat the shit out of it. Staying neutral is never a bad thing to do if you're not sure.

4. Smile, no matter what happend
Smile is really a useful tool in life. I remember smiling to a local couple (I mean Tasmanian people) during a exhibition in the city which I was alone at that time. Surprisingly, we ended up chatting for the next 20 minutes..... haha..... not a bad day at all. =D I think I can say "You'll never know who's going to fall in love with your smiles"

5. Stock up more on banana and chocolate
You will never know when you will feel depressed or demotivated. So, it's best to have them on the shelf all the time. XD Even if you're not depressed you can always grab one and eat! Banana can make your shit slip out smoothly like it never does, and chocolate..... erm....erm......hmm....
it makes you FAT and HAPPY!!! =D

Happy New Year to all!

First time ...

First time celebrating Christmas overseas with a local family.... what can I say....
hmmm.... Nothing more but a decent
"THANK YOU"
It's not a Christmas dinner, but it's a lunch on Christmas day. There're nine of us, the father, mother, 2 sons, Gran (granny in short), the uncle, the aunt , little cousin and me. It's my first time ever being invited to a local's gathering, not to mention my first time experiencing X'mas in Aussie. The feeling was awesome! =D

The photo is blur..... haha
From left: the mother, Gran and me in the kitchen

Rudolf, the red nose raindeer by Robbie

The angel barbie and Christmas ghost (I think) haha...
all done by Alex

The 2 photos above are some of the interesting deco I found on the Christmas tree. They may looked silly to most people, but, they hold great sentimental values respectively. They're mostly done by the two sons- Alex and Robbie (who are already 18 and 16), according to their Mum. It reminded me of my Mum as well.... =') My brother and I used to attend drawing classes when we were very young, and my Mum keep all our drawings... yes.... all of them, including those which are fugly as well. =D Sometimes, things don't need to be beautiful to be beautiful, got me?

Oh ya! I even got a prezzie! XD
A BOX OF CHOCOLATE SHORT BREAD!!!
(T___T) *touched*

Even though it's just a simple gathering, but I do learn many things from it.
Love you all and may the Frost family will always be showered with joy and love.

Merry X'mas again everyone!

Christmas looo!

It has been some time since I last updated about my recent life.
It's officially summer few days ago!
WEE!
Wee!
WEE!! WEE! WEEEEEeeee!

I'M SO SO SO HAPPY!!!
(I don't know why, I love only and only summer)
\(^____^ lll)/
the feeling of being able to sweat is so nice! haha... weird huh?

Life during holiday is much more compact, busier and more tiring. But it's a good thing to be continuously tiring =] Nothing much but the work at the farm, attended my seniors' graduation and fishing.

I'm sure those in Malaysia are wondering about Christmas in Tassie. Nothing really special, no white Christmas. XD But I do noticed something special about the 尾牙(in Mandarin) a.k.a lunch session held by companies to thank the employees, at the same time, kick off the Christmasy mood to the MAX! At the afternoon on Christmas eve, you will see all the restaurants in the cities crowded with employers and employees. Sure not a common sight in Malaysia.

On Christmas day, I'm going off to a local family for a lunch gathering. Hope everything is fine! First time Christmas in overseas!

Merry Christmas to all who celebrates it and HO HO HO!
Don't forget to hang up your socks beside the hearth! Who knows, right?

Sing along with me...

Life as a farm worker has already started 2 weeks ago and nothing special about the job, just some apple thinning (which means getting rid of the small apples on the tree and reduce the competition among apples, so that the average and big apples can grow bigger in a shorter period)

The farm is located around 25 minutes drive away from the place I currently staying. It's not really that far, especially when you use the highway.

Hmm.... lets talk about the workers in the farm then. There are around 40 workers in the farm and mostly are locals. We are generally paired up with some one else in the work, so that we can speed up the work progress. There're quite a number of trueblood Aussies, a French, a few Kenyans, some Africans, 2 Malaysians and a Korean.

For the first few days, I had no partner (due to the total odd number of people in our group). When people were moving a head, fast; I was left far far behind..... certainly don't like that kind of feeling, alone in a farm and left to work on your own. =<

Luckily, a few newbies came, and I was paired up with the Korean guy. His name is Seung Huan or normally known as Chuck. He looked like 21 the most, but is actually 26. And he said he thought that I'm at least 26, or more than that. haha.... I think I do need some extra dose of botox and 24/7 using SK II. XD

The funny thing is he learnt Mandarin in his Uni and had a Chinese girl friend. haha.... and he told me "Faster go and find yourself a sexy hot babe before they're all grabbed up!"
(-_____= llll) haha..... what can I say? "sure~" XP

We did something unusual in the farm today.... F*** those who have dirty minds. haha...
We actually sang in the farm.... Just imagine, a piece of land with two ends vanishing in distance that can't be seen... and two asians are singing. So what did we actually sing?

Due to language inefficiency, we had a pretty limited song list.
Song list:
-《对面的女孩看过来》 (he started it first.... haha...and the pronunciation is not bad though)
-《Gee》 he said no Korean guys are not crazy with Girl Generation... I agree...hahak!
-《Selamat Hari Jadi》and Korean version of 《Happy Birthday》
and the playlist just repeat for the whole day... haha
*I almost sang 《Negaraku》 and ask him to sing Korea's national anthem. XD

Cloudless sky
Scorching sun
Towering trees
Boring job
.......
another day!

Bargain Hunters

Shopping!

Shopping!!

SHOPPING!!!

The word 'shopping' is always said to be women's nature.

Sad?? SHOPPING!!

Happy?? SHOPPING (again?)

Frustrated? SHOPPING!!

Conclusion: SHOP Till You Drop XD

In Tassie, I found myself started to love that too.

"CHOT-TO-MA-TEH-kudasai!!!"

It totally different from the shopping that girls do, kay~
My territory only lies within GARAGE SALE.
It's a sale normally held at the garage or just outside of the house.
You can find a range of useful and dirt cheap stuffs, for example furniture, kitchen equipments, guitars, shoes, sandals, hats, computer, piano, sewing machines, machine used to cut tiles, goldfish bowl, table lamp, BBQ pit, futsal table, make up, bed, mattress, exercise machines, dictionaries, drawing paper, photo frames, clocks, lawn mower, wallets, TVs, microwave, toaster, wok, dictionaries, toys, X-box, PS, fishing rod, tents, trampoline, i-phone, fans, crayons, monster motorbike, cars, helicopters, jackets, speed boats, door knobs, clothes hanger, cutlery, camera, speakers, undies, boots, slippers, washing machines, fridge..... end less.... they're simply endless.

However, it all depends on luck. Sometimes, you will come across lots of bric-a-bracs, which is normally useless.. haha... I think antique collectors would find it interesting. XD

I somehow feel like playing amazing race. It's very common for the locals to go to garage sale during weekend. We normally start hunting at around 8 am, and there're normally 1 driver and 1 map reader.... haha... like in the car race. It's a good way to explore the surroundings as you might find yourself lost somewhere and some how manage to come out of it.

Definitely go again next week.... it's almost christmas and people are buying new stuffs while the old need to go .... and lucky to the hunters.

Neighbours

It's been almost half a year since I moved into my current house. Fast huh?
This post, obviously, is going to be about my fellow neighbours.

On my left is a blonde woman (probably in her thirties). I've never really talk to her yet, the most is just "Hi! .... Bye!" (=_____= lll)
But, what I noticed is that she owns a female Golden retriever. The height of the fence between my house and her house is not really high. Whenever I'm free, I will go to the fence and call her golden retriever..... and it will come and lean against the fence. Then, I would spend my whole morning petting on its back. Even though my mum used to rear 16 cats, I still prefer dogs as company. They're loyal, loyal, and loyal, unlike cats who adapt to new owners in just seconds.

I miss my pets X(

On the right of my house live a lovely old couple - Mr and Mrs Duke. They lived by themselves and their daily routine is go to the market (supermarket) and gardening, an easy and slow pace life. By the way, Mr Duke owns a garage filled with all the basic gardening tools and some cutting machines. When the grass in my house touches my eyebrows, I always ask for the help of his grass trimming machines.

My housemate always jokes that he actually is a psychotic serial killer.... like what you saw in "The Saw" XD This is because he's always busy sawing something in his workshop and it sounds like somebody sawing human bones or something that is hard.

Across the road is a family migrated from Bhudan. I always see the grandparents walking around Launceston, and I think I've met them more than 10 times in a same supermarket. They obtained their Permanent Residence status 2 years ago, and now the whole family is here and they now owned two houses at the corner of the road.

hmmm..... just as a record.

Random.... random...

Few days ago, I switched on the TV, and jumped from channel to channel.... suddenly, I heard somebody's talking in Mandarin and Malaysian HOKKIEN some more!!!
At that point, my instinct told me to stop and stare.....

ohhh.... it's the movie "20, 30, 40". For those don't know about this, it's actually a Mandarin movie which revolves around the life of three women, who are at the different stage of their life.

THREE MAIN CHARACTERs
李心洁, a 20 year old Malaysian Chinese girl who found herself caught between her dream and the reality. Her parents asked her to find a mundane, monotonous job which offers a stable income. However, she insisted to venture to Taiwan, a country which she believes she will find her stardom. That's the final straw of her dream
However, things are not that simple... (=_=)
My comment on this character : 梦想与现实是能共存的,你确定吗?

刘若英,an air-stewardess in her early thirties and still single. She has no confidence in men and relationship. However, she still try her best to find her Mr. Right... ... a middle-age doctor who is other's husband at the same time? or a young artist who has an unstable career, but still single?
My comment on this character : 如果你相信,你就得耐心等待

张艾嘉, with a '4' hanging infront of her age, she owned a happy family and her own flower shop. However, her marriage ended with a shocking discovery of a third party...... A woman with a heart broken.... what's the remedy?
My comment on this character : 天底下最可悲的人是抛弃自己的自己

Actually, I noticed this movie long time ago (it's produced in 2004, which means I'm already in secondary school), just that I thought it is another brainless movie, with tonnes of women flaunting their gigantic boobs and exaggerated body figures in front of innocent viewers. However, I found this movie rather tauntingly meaningful and made me think a lot.

Someone told me before :
"You'll have different opinions on your previous act, especially when you viewed it after some years, when you are more grown-up and tasted more of your LIFE"

My Uni holidays have commenced since last Friday and even though I got myself 2 casual work, life still seemed to be pretty empty and soul-less. hmm... perhaps going to find more jobs ($~$)

Besides eating, sleeping, breathing, shitting and working, life without Uni would be
FISHING!!! (you've no other choice in Tasmania)
and today, I went fishing again with some friends.
The special thing about this fishing trip is that an old 'pak cik' joint us this time. If not mistaken he's someone's father, and grandfather of 20+ grandchildren. bahagia nyer~~

nothing special actually, just that he reminded me of my grandfathers when I helped him to change his fishing line (because they get tangled up too often and I suggest him to change the whole line)

方言 a.k.a. local dialect. I still remember we used to have poster drawing competition with the topic "多讲华语,少讲方言” when we were in primary school.
(if in Malay, I think it would be "Berjinak-jinak dengan Bahasa Baku, Mengelakkan loghat masing-masing" I'm not sure the translation is correct or not) XD

But, after listening to a programme by a Mandarin radio station in Malaysia which discuss mainly about the essentiality of local dialects and their roles in present and future society,

MY PERCEPTION CHANGE COMPLETELY!!

The DJ asked a very impactive question :
"方言真的那么重要吗?怎么重要?是纯粹文化保留?
还是它实实在在的存有如现今英语与华语的经济价值?。”
"Does local dialect really posses the reason/s to be kept alive?
Or just plainly a way to preserve some particular cultural heritages?
Does it play any significant roles in the economical point of view,
like how English and Mandarin being encouraged nowadays?"

The answer is very simple : "There's no answer to this"

Even though people may say local dialects work really well in tying the local communities together, they might as well forgotten that dialects not only created a language barrier among that particular groups of people, but also those who don't understand it.
You might say : "We still have the main languages"
But, do you think a group of people will really be able to communicate freely and stress-less when there're groups who're whispering around in their own dialects while others are talking in the main languages?
Don't you feel kind of awkward when you're in a group of people who speak language that you barely understand?

I used to struggle in that situation when I first went to KL, when English is spoken throughout the place. From my comfort 100%-MANDARIN-based kindergarten, primary & secondary schools, I forced my self to converse more in English.
From never-more-than-5minutes to around-5minutes, 10 minutes, half and hour and so on... ... till today! =) and

I've met somebody who yelled

"BASTARD! Can't you just talk in English, which all of us could understand?!"

at me when I talked to my friend in Mandarin when we're in a group of "rojak" (black, brown, yellow, pink, blue, green.... you name it, you got it) haha... I felt really furious and embarrassed when he harassed me at that time. But, I'm really glad that he did that and I didn't reconcile and mess up the whole thing. XD

recently, I like to dig up some of the old songs which I used to like
but don't really understand in the past.
It's fun to view it from other perspectives XD

random.... random .... and more randomness coming up!
Why?
because it's HOLIDAY!!!

p/s: "Trick or treat? treat? Come'on! Trick laaa... haha"

A bloke rings triple zero and says,
"Quick! Quick! Send an ambulance. My wife's having a baby! For God's sake, HURRYyyy!"

"Just calm down a moment," says the operator. "Is this her first baby?"

"YOU &##*&^*&%@*#&%@&^@*$&! ," says the bloke,
"THIS IS HER HUSBAND!!!"
